On June 11, Swiss-based Focuslight, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Focuslight Technology, announced that it had reached an important technology licensing agreement with a world-leading semiconductor foundry company, involving the authorized use of two core technologies, microprism lens arrays and vertical optical couplers.
It is reported that the licensed technology originates from the mature process independently developed by Swiss Focuslight. As the core connection component for regulating optical paths, the technology has completed multiple rounds of iterative verification in cutting-edge fields such as AI computing power and data centers.
According to the terms of the agreement, AH will obtain a non-exclusive global technology license for optical path control and coupling applications in semiconductor products. The one-time technology license fee under the agreement will reach US$13 million, plus product royalties based on sales tiers. Payment will be advanced in four milestones, from contract signing to completion of manufacturing process verification. This technology license has been reviewed and approved by the Board of Directors of Juguang Technology and is pending final approval at the extraordinary shareholders' meeting.
Focuslight Technology stated that through this strategic collaboration, the company can continue to improve the company's capabilities in the field of micro-nano optics by contacting the cutting-edge needs of international leading customer AH Company in AI computing power, data centers and other fields.
In addition, by licensing the core technology to AH Company, it will effectively help the company achieve large-scale promotion of the edge coupling technology route it participates in in the field of CPO optical interconnection.
Focuslight Technology is deeply involved in the upstream of the photonics industry chain, and its business covers high-power semiconductor laser components, laser optical components, and midstream photonics application solutions. Its products are widely used in optical communications, consumer electronics, automobiles, pan-semiconductor processes, and medical and health fields.
In recent years, Focuslight Technology has rapidly expanded its global footprint through a series of overseas mergers and acquisitions. The most strategic one is the acquisition of Swiss SUSS MicroOptics completed in early 2024. The target was later renamed Swiss Focuslight. It has a profound background in micro-nano optical technology in the field of optical communications. Its products cover light source collimation, focusing and coupling in scenarios such as optical modules, silicon optical modules, photonic integrated circuits and CPO. Its customers include leading optical chip and module manufacturers around the world.
This technology license is the latest achievement of Focuslight Technology’s optical communications strategy. After acquiring Switzerland's Focuslight, the company made it clear that it would vigorously develop optical communications and silicon photonics businesses, making them an important growth engine. By licensing core technologies to international semiconductor foundry giants, Focuslight Technology not only realizes technical value returns, but also has the ability to deeply participate in joint development projects, gain access to cutting-edge demands in the fields of AI computing power and data centers, and accelerate its own technology iterations.
