Greenhouses in Taiwan use red LEDs to illuminate grapes, saving 75% of electricity and making the fruit plumper.

Recently, many greenhouses emitting "red light" appeared in Macuo Village, Xihu Town, Changhua County, Taiwan. When people from other places passed by, some people thought they looked like Christmas lights.

Local people said that this is because farmers are afraid of low temperatures during the flowering period of grapes. The use of nighttime red LED lights can promote the growth of new shoots and improve fruit setting, while reducing electricity costs.

The Taichung District Agricultural Reform Farm stated that grapes often suffer from insufficient sunshine in early spring, which affects the quality of the grapes. Farmers carry out electric lighting from 10 pm to 4 am, and each period of electric lighting lasts about 20 to 30 days. Farmer surnamed Qiu said that the effect of using red LED lights is better than that of white lights. He did not hesitate to purchase red LED lights that are five times more expensive than white lights. They are placed in areas with insufficient sunlight during the day. Not only can the fruit yield be increased, but the grape particles will also be particularly large.

The Taichung Agricultural Reform Center stated that if 23W energy-saving light bulbs are installed at a distance of 3.3 meters, a thousand bulbs are needed per hectare. If 10W red LED light bulbs are used, the distance can be expanded to 6.3 meters, and only 500 light bulbs are needed per hectare. This will give full play to the effect of low-wattage large-area radiation and reduce electricity costs by 75%.
